Design of palm heart pieces, following ancestral techniques and tradition.

Antic Mallorca

In Majorca, fan palm handcrafting is one of the few active production processes that are 100% local and sustainable. This process is an example of human ingenuity, of the ability to create useful pieces of great beauty using only one single material: the fan palm leaf.

The fan palm grows wild in Mallorca and is the only palm tree native to the Balearic Islands. It has palmate leaves and its distribution on the islands is somewhat erratic; in some places it is abundant, while in others it does not grow at all. The fan palm is resistant to fires and resprouts after a fire, which is why it is abundant in some burnt areas.

Antic Mallorca is undertaking research to go back to the origin and rediscover the original solutions with a new look, with the possibilities provided by the natural environment.

“We elaborate the whole process following the tradition of Ses Madones de Sa Llata de Capdepera, a group of craftswomen who learned the trade from their mothers and grandmothers, developed it in their youth, abandoned it during the island’s tourist boom and took it up again after retirement, and have kept it alive up to the present day. They are our teachers and our source of inspiration to change our outlook and understand the value of going back to the origins”.

“In 2014 we proposed to Ses Madones that they teach us this technique in depth in order to be able to pass on this art and craft to new generations. Since 2018 we have taught llata technique to more than 300 people and we continue to do so through the artisan school.”

“At Antic Mallorca we design fan palm pieces, we create new shapes that evolve the traditional patterns of this craft and incorporate colourful geometric designs, which are abstractions of the Majorcan landscape. We embroider them by hand with ribbons left in stock from a textile factory that closed at the beginning of this century, and which we have recovered from old haberdasheries on the island and the mainland.”

“For this Círculo collection, as well as for all Antic Mallorca pieces, we have harvested the palm heart in the Llevant mountains of Mallorca. The palms are dried, and sulphur is applied (in a process known as ensofrat), thus smoking them for their preservation. The leaves are prepared by cutting them into strips which are then used to make the “llata”, a plait as long as the piece requires, which is then sewn onto itself to form the shape of the bowl. The thread used for sewing is the leaf of the fan palm itself, so the whole piece is made from this unique organic material. They are creations made to last for many years”.
